RATING:

HOOKED by Kate Davies is a modern day romance between two people who start out with very different agendas and opposing points of view.  Will they be able to negotiate a compromise?

Madison McIntyre is an executive of a big development company who hopes to start a very large project in the coastal town of Westhaven.  Dylan Edwards is a fisherman who would like to keep Westhaven just the way it is.  Madison knows going into this little town that, if its inhabitants find out why she's there, she will not be getting a visit from the welcome wagon.  So she hides her intentions for a time, while doing her homework and putting together a proposal for the next town meeting.  This gives her a chance to get to know the townspeople of Westhaven, including Dylan Edwards.

About a quarter of the way through, I was fully engrossed in this delightful romance.  I especially enjoyed Kate Davies' writing style.  I was able to read the entire novel in a single setting, with each page leading me effortlessly into the next.  There was a satisfying amount of conflict maintained between Madison and Dylan, which kept the sexual tension nice and high, and it continued to build throughout the book for an excellent climax at the end (no pun intended).  All in all, HOOKED provides an entertaining story, lots of romance, and an enjoyable reading experience.

I was a bit perplexed by the book's cover and listing as "erotic" romance.  I personally tend to think of erotica as containing more explicit (or unusual) sex than romance, whereas romance generally has more relationship stuff than erotica. Erotic romance, then, ought to have both.  I felt that HOOKED was almost entirely romance, with nearly all of the interactions between Madison and Dylan focusing around the building of their relationship.  I mention this only for reasons of clarity.  I would hate for Kate Davies’ story to get lost--or worse, get bad write-ups--simply because it was categorized incorrectly.  So reader, if you're looking for an easy, romantic novel you can read by the fire, this is a very good choice.  If you prefer something that requires you to check your blood pressure periodically, this might not be exactly the thing.  If this doesn't matter, provided it is a good story that is well written, then you will enjoy HOOKED by Kate Davies.
